Did you know that squats can help your brain stay healthy? Not only does is this exercise do wonders for your glutes, your brain health increases to. It was found when two-year-old twins were checked 10 years apart, they were able to verify that people with stronger legs had younger brains. Scientists say squatting can help your brain stay healthy for a long time.

In addition to the obvious and previously known benefits of exercise, such as having better endurance and cardiovascular health, scientists claim that it is good for neck health  as well. The study was conducted at King’s College in the UK  for the past 10 years.

This research included 324 British twin women between the ages of 43 and 73. Their learning abilities and their patterns of memory and thinking were tested at the beginning of the study, and again at the end. Scientists have come to the conclusion that strong legs can be linked to healthier people with slower brain aging.

Women who had stronger legs at the start of the research retained their mental capacity better than their twin sisters and had fewer age-related changes in the brain.

Scientists are proud of this finding because twins are the most relevant and useful measure because they share many biological factors, from genetics to early life, and their comparison is far more valuable than comparing two people at random.

The correlation and the mechanisms behind this discovery are not yet clear, but there are several possible explanations. Exercise reduces stress and improves blood circulation in the brain, and keeps you mentally committed – you have to concentrate a lot. When you work out, whether you are running, lifting weights or just walking, things are all around you. It keeps you mentally engaged, which does not happen if you are simply sitting on the couch.

A regular walk around the neighborhood is quite useful for maintaining proper brain function as we age. It is undeniable that these findings are extremely important for the future of medicine, but since they do not have the exact causal relationship, and it is still unclear whether the same results also apply to men, although more research is needed.

How has the connection between the brain and the lower body been studied? Why not the abs?

The larger muscles are located in the lower part of the body. The gluteus muscles, commonly known as gluteal muscles – consist of three groups of muscles: the gluteus maximus, gluteus medius and maximus – and together form one of the strongest muscle groups. This region is extremely important in the human structure because it helps to rotate and extend the hips and support us while we are standing. It also helps fight gravity when climbing stairs.

The longest muscle is called Sartorius, and is one that runs along the entire length of the thigh, between the pelvis and the knee, responsible for the hip and knee flexion. The one muscle capable of pulling with the greatest force is the soleus, located below the calf muscle. This little wonder prevents us from falling backwards while standing. It is essential for walking , running or dancing.

So, if some of the stronger muscles are found in the lower body, it is no wonder why the health of this area has been shown to have a great impact on the brain.

More benefits of squatting

It is no coincidence that you feel happier, less anxious and stressed after a workout. Your body recognizes a workout as a difficult and stressful time. When the heart rate increases, the body thinks that it is fighting against some type of enemy, so the brain is protected by the release of the protein called brain-derived neurotrophic factor (commonly abbreviated FNDC). This protein protects and repairs memory neurons. It is the main reason, along with another fight stress chemical known as endorphin, why you feel so happy and clear mind after a walk or a workout.
